The idea for this trip started when Mike McLaughlin's son Tom and my son Charles, along with their friend Andy McAllister, hiked the continental divide in Wyoming's Wind River Range this summer.  Mike and I decided we also should make take a backpacking trip.  He always wanted to hike Isle Royale in Lake Superior.

This is my journal of the trip.  Mike and I left Omaha just after 7 AM and arrived at Grand Marais, MN 12 1/2 hours later.  We stayed at the Super 8 motel.  The "Howling Wolf" was a bar and cafe just like many that I remember in the mountains in Montana.  They were supposed to have kareoke, but we didn't stay around to hear the small crowd sing.

This trip was before the fall color change on the North Shore but after Labor Day and Grand Marais was very quiet.  So Mike and I headed back to our room to divide the backpacking food and other supplies and I hit the sack after calling Camille.

We made this trip in September of 1999.  I would appreciate trading stories of similar trips and would answer any questions.
